I was named after my mom’s brother. His full name was Stephen Mayo Hiscock and he went by Skip or Skipper. The below photo is a Christmas card that my uncle sent home to his family and friends roughly one month before his death. At the young age of 20, my Uncle Skipper was shot down in a helicopter during the Vietnam War. Once I saw this card on my parents refrigerator I wanted to replicate the photo somehow and give it as a Christmas gift to my grandparents (his parents). Now that I’m a photographer I notice more elements to photographs. And to me, this shot captures so much. Oftentimes, people ask me where I got my name. I always enjoy telling the story…it makes me proud of what he did and that I get to bear the same name.

The second photo below is what I decided to do for my grandparents Christmas gift this year. Hope you had a great Christmas and here’s to a great 2010…

That photo brings back memories of your heroic uncle. I met him there, at the helipad in Quang Tri. From what I hear from your grandparents your uncle would be proud to know you are carrying his name.

And – take this from a guy who needed excellent photogs to help me earn a paycheck every week. Your photos are superb.
    Let’s meet up some day.

    Mort
